Martin & Merritt Project Advances
Transformative Wedgewood-Houston Development Marks Milestone of Community Collaboration
WEHO Social proudly announces a landmark mixed-use development that represents years of careful negotiation, community engagement, and compassionate urban redevelopment in the Wedgewood-Houston neighborhood.
The project at Martin & Merritt tells a story of complexity, commitment, and community care. What began as a challenging redevelopment opportunity involving a mobile home community has evolved into a thoughtful urban transformation, with SomeraRoad demonstrating exceptional sensitivity to existing residents' needs.
"This project is more than just new buildings," said Chad DiDonato, spokesperson for the WeHo Social Neighborhood Association. "It's a testament to collaborative urban development. SomeraRoad has gone above and beyond in ensuring that every resident of the former mobile home community was treated with dignity, provided relocation assistance, and offered meaningful benefits throughout the process."
The development's journey has been marked by significant challenges:
- Complex site conditions requiring extensive community consultation
- Comprehensive relocation support for existing residents
- Careful preservation of neighborhood character
- Extensive negotiations to balance development goals with community needs
The final Martin & Merritt project reflects years of patient dialogue and commitment:
- 155-key hotel with distinctive architectural design
- 153 residential units across interconnected structures
- Approximately 5,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space
- Thoughtful integration with neighborhood topography
- Multiple public amenities, including pocket parks and rooftop spaces
SomeraRoad has consistently demonstrated its commitment to being a "good neighbor" throughout this process. The developer worked closely with community stakeholders, providing professional services, relocation benefits, and maintaining transparent communication with existing residents.
The project features innovative design elements that respect the neighborhood's architectural heritage, including materials and form that echo the area's longstanding masonry structures. Designed by Pfeffer Torode Architecture, the development will create enhanced public spaces, pedestrian connections, and a vibrant urban environment.
"Time and time again, SomeraRoad has proven its dedication to responsible urban development," DiDonato added. "This project is not just about building new structures, but about building community."
The development is scheduled for review at the January 9, 2025 Metro Planning Commission meeting, marking a significant milestone in the neighborhood's thoughtful transformation.
