Retail Coming to Wedgewood Houston

Local developer David Creed has unveiled plans for an exciting new 25,000-square-foot retail development in the vibrant Wedgewood-Houston neighborhood. The project, located at 601 Hagan St., will feature a mix of food, beverage, and soft goods retailers, bringing a fresh wave of commerce to the area.

“We have designed a new construction product that fits perfectly into the neighborhood; our base concept for design is modeled after a mid-century warehouse with a greenhouse on top,” Creed told the Business Journal. “We felt like this would fit beautifully into the neighborhood.”

The development will boast a unique greenhouse roof, blending seamlessly with the character of Wedgewood-Houston. Creed Investment Co. is collaborating with Snipe Properties, led by Stan Snipes, and Perkins Construction, led by McGuire Perkins, for this project. The trio has a history of successful partnerships, including the renovation of Second Avenue’s Pilcher Building, home to Rudy’s Jazz Room in the Gulch, and the Oak Barrel building in Berry Hill.

David Creed is renowned for his work on Music Row and his knack for identifying and enhancing hip neighborhoods. His notable projects include the 15-story Moore Building at 827 19th Ave S., developed in partnership with Atlanta-based Portman Holdings and anchored by TikTok’s Nashville office.

The development team for the Moore Building, including Brian Hubbard of Gensler, Brad Slayden of Ragan Smith, and Alvine Engineering, will also be tackling this new retail project. Although Creed does not yet own the site, the 0.84-acre property, currently holding an industrial building, is owned by a trust affiliated with Thomas McEwen, who purchased it for $350,000 in 2011, according to Metro records.

The new retail destination will be situated next to luxury home furnishing brands like Schumacher and Nashville-based La Parisienne Home. Schumacher, known for its exquisite fabrics, wallcoverings, and home accessories, has been a staple in the design community for over a century. Their presence in Wedgewood-Houston adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to the neighborhood. La Parisienne Home, a beloved local brand, offers a curated selection of high-end furniture and decor, blending French-inspired aesthetics with Southern charm. Their showroom is a testament to timeless style and quality craftsmanship.

The neighborhood is home to Fort Negley, the largest fortification built by the Union after the fall of Nashville in 1862. Originally an industrial area filled with warehouses, factories, and garages, WeHo has undergone a significant transformation over the past decade. Once known for its proximity to the former Nashville Sounds baseball stadium, the area is now a hub for Nashville’s most prestigious art galleries and creative spaces.

The neighborhood’s industrial roots are still evident in its architecture, with many historic buildings repurposed for modern use. Notable landmarks include the Merritt Mansion, built in 1840, and the Houston Station, a former factory complex now home to various businesses. The area’s vibrant arts scene is highlighted by the monthly art crawl, Arts and Music at Wedgewood-Houston, which showcases local galleries and creative spaces.
